No Bail For Alisha Walker, Ohio Woman, Who Allegedly Stabbed Brother Rice Teacher 13 Times

Bail was denied Thursday for a 20-year-old Ohio woman accused of murdering a popular business teacher at Brother Rice High School in the Chicago suburbs.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, prosecutors say Al Filan had been stabbed 13 times, including in his chest, when the 61-year-old teacher was found in his Orland Park, Ill. home on the morning of Jan. 21, while authorities were conducting a well-being check after the teacher had not appeared for work.

Alisha Walker, of Akron, Ohio, had been held at the Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, Ind., since she was arrested Friday and charged in connection with Filan's death.

Police said last week Filan had met the woman through Backpage.com, an Internet classifieds site, and alleged the suspect killed him over a dispute about how much she would be paid for performing sex acts. She had been traced to the murder after police found text messages from her cell phone number, which matched a Backpage.com ad, were found on Filan's phone, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Police also noted Filan met Walker at least two other times prior to their final encounter on Jan. 16, according to the Des Plaines Valley News.

Walker's family claims the woman, who had a history of sex work, acted in self-defense after Filan threatened her friend -- who was allegedly also at Filan's home at the time of the incident and worked for the same escort service as the suspect. Walker told police that Filan and she struggled and he proceeded to grab a knife, which she took from him, DNAinfo Chicago reports.

A memorial service for Filan, who taught and coached soccer at the school for more than 10 years, has been scheduled for Friday, according to Patch.

Walker is due back in court on an unrelated pending drug charge on March 25.
