Three men killed overnight Thursday in shootings in Chicago joined two others who died of wounds from previous shootings over the same 18-hour period.
In the most recent shooting, 74-year-old Willy Cooper, a deacon at St. Phillip Neri Church, was found fatally shot inside a vehicle in the 7000 block of South East End Avenue, CBS Chicago reports.
Those who knew Cooper told the station he was a riveting preacher who mentored young men in the community.
Just three blocks away and about a half hour later, in the 6700 block of South East End Avenue, a 41-year-old man was also found dead in a vehicle, the Chicago Tribune reports. Both men were shot multiple times.
Police are currently investigating whether the two fatal shootings were related.
Earlier in the evening, about 3 a.m., a 27-year-old man was fatally shot when a gunman approached and opened fire as the man was getting out of his car near the intersection of 53rd Street and Talman Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, DNAinfo Chicago reports. Police believe the shooting was gang-related.
Meanwhile, two teens hurt in shootings earlier in the week died of their wounds Wednesday.
Christopher Ramirez, 16, died at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday in an area hospital, one day after he was shot Tuesday night in the 2600 block of South Trumbull Avenue in Little Village, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Earlier Wednesday, 17-year-old Ladarius Brisco was pronounced dead at 1:50 p.m. at Stroger Hospital. According to the Sun-Times, Brisco had been shot in the head about 1 p.m. Monday in the 8200 block of South Champlain Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood.
