Former Cook County Commissioner William Beavers reported to a Minnesota prison Monday to begin serving a six-month sentence for a corruption conviction.
A prison spokesman confirmed that Beavers reported to the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minn. at 7:49 a.m. Monday, Fox Chicago reports.
The 78-year-old Democrat from Chicago's South Side made several prior attempts to stall his sentence, but just last week three federal appeals court judges rejected Beavers' request for a delay.
As the Sun-Times reports, Beavers' attorneys argued that with a six-month sentence, his appeal would likely be decided well after his release.
Beavers was convicted in March for tax evasion after he was found guilty of siphoning off $226,000 worth of campaign money to pay for gambling debts racked up at the Horseshoe Casino on top of other personal expenses that went unreported.
Beavers had argued the case was "retribution" for refusing to cooperate in an investigation of his colleagues and that any campaign money used was spent "on loan" and ultimately repaid.
