Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane played with a heavy heart on Monday night. Kane found out mere hours before his Blackhawks were scheduled to play on the road against the Los Angeles Kings that his grandfather, Donald Kane, had passed away.
Not only did Kane play, he also ended up putting on a dominant performance. Winner of the 2013 Conn Smythe trophy, Kane finished the game with two goals to go along with an assist in Chicago's 5-3 victory. Kane scored his first goal just 62 seconds into the game when he got the puck in the corner and immediately attacked the net, putting it past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick.
As he made his way to the bench after the goal, the 25-year-old kissed his finger and pointed to the sky.
Following the victory, an emotional Kane teared up while talking to reporters about his grandfather.
"He was one of my great friends growing up. It’s just a really sad, sad day," he said. "It was important to get the win, but any time you someone taken away from you, who’s so close to you, who means so much, it’s tough to get ready for the game."
