A dramatic hostage standoff in suburban Chicago ended Thursday evening with the shooter dead and a police officer critically injured.
Police responded to a report of a man with a gun, later identified as 41-year-old Eric M. Anderson, inside a suburban Arlington Heights townhome around 6:50 p.m. Thursday.
The Tribune reports the first officer to enter the home, Michael McEvoy, 52, was shot in the neck. Police say Anderson then barricaded himself inside the home and took a woman hostage.
Around 10:30 p.m, a SWAT team entered the home and fired three shots, one of which fatally struck Anderson, according to the Daily Herald. Anderson was pronounced dead at an area hospital shortly after 11 p.m.
The neighborhood had been on lockdown with reporters standing by as the situation unfolded:
McEvoy, a 20-year veteran of the force, was removed after he was shot and taken to an area hospital in critical condition. WGN reports following surgery the officer was still in critical condition Friday morning, but stable.
The hostage was unharmed but hospitalized as a precaution. Police have not identified the woman or given her relationship to Anderson.
"I would surmise it was a domestic incident. I don't know the specifics," Arlington Heights Police Cmdr. Andrew Whowell said, according to ABC Chicago.
Arlington Heights Village President Thomas Hayes praised the efforts by law enforcement, telling the Daily Herald, "I think the police handled it very professionally and as well as could be expected. I'm glad we could get the situation resolved with no other injures to innocent people."
